Brief Description

GEM1023 - Living Amidst Outbreaks
Workload (lecture, tutorial, lab, project/assignment work, preparative hours) per week: 2-1-0-5-2
Description: The modern day evolution of infectious disease is one of microbes taking full advantage of human activities in our urban environment that allow them to thrive and spread among us. Major outbreaks occur from time to time, and represent natural experiments which afford opportunities for us to learn about the microbial world. This interdisciplinary module provides an understanding of the science and art of living amidst outbreaks and protecting ourselves. Topics will cover natural history of the microbial agents, health risks in our built environment, building and its impact on indoor environmental quality, and how to live with looming heath threats.
